The editors referred to Cincinnati as the Queen of the West in a number of newspaper pieces. Cincinnati was regarded as being in the far west at the time. The future states further beyond it had not yet been developed or annexed by the rest of the United States. Other names for it included Athens of the West. Later, Queen of the West was abbreviated to Queen City.
