1. La Candelaria
La Candelaria pulsates with activity in the heart of Bogota’s historic centre. Its attractive colonial architecture, bright street art, cobblestone streets, and enchanting fusion of history and culture. This vibrant and creative neighbourhood will enchant you. Every aspect of La Candelaria is a visual feast, from the mesmerising Gold Museum to the Plaza de Bolvar (a haven for people-watching!). Exploring La Candelaria from top to bottom is an unforgettable experience that is a must-do in Bogota!
2. Walking Tour
Exploring the old town on your own is essential, but so is taking a “Free” La Candelaria Walking Tour! This tour will teach you about the city’s interesting history, from pre-Hispanic times. The indigenous Muisca people ruled the region through the Spanish conquest. The Call for Independence, and beyond. The tour concludes with a stop at an artisanal cafetera. You will sample Colombian Chemex coffee.
3. Botero Museum
Fernando Botero is a Colombian artist best known for his unique style. Boterismo, depicts people, animals, and other objects in exaggerated sizes. Usually for amusement or to make a political point. I adore the eccentricity of his work. Everyone else does, too! Botero is, in reality, the wealthiest and recognizable contemporary artist! He is currently in his nineties. He is a Colombian legend, and you will notice his art throughout the country. The museum is and always will be free to enter. When Fernando Botero donated 200+ pieces of art to the Banco de la Republica in 2000, that was one of his conditions.
4. Street Art Tour
Tagging, graffiti, and street art are all legal in Bogota. It means you’ll see some fantastic paintings. It didn’t always operate like that. Bogotanos can credit Justin Bieber in part for the transformation. (This narrative will be in detail during your Graffiti Tour in La Candelaria!) This 1.5-hour guided walking tour was entertaining and informative. This Graffiti Tour in La Candelaria will not disappoint! There are two tours available: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
5. Funicular or Cable Car
Are you prepared for a stunning perspective of Bogota? You can take the funicular or cable car (teleférico) up to the Monserrate Sanctuary and back down, or you can walk! However, because the mountain is steep, hiking down is not good for your knees! Given the altitude, hiking up is also difficult. Choose your favourite! I chose to ride the funicular up and down. If possible, go on a clear, sunny day… Not at all like what I did!
6. Gold Museum
The Gold Museum in Bogota is a veritable treasure trove! With over 55,000 pieces of gold, bronze, and other materials. This museum displays the world’s greatest collection of gold artefacts. You’ll away into Colombia’s rich past, warmed by the radiance of its treasured displays. Don’t miss the hypnotic ‘Muisca Raft,’ a stunning depiction of the El Dorado ritual. Trust me when I say that this museum is more than a visual feast – it’s a trip back in time!
